Day 2

Breakout Session #5: Recovery Starts on the Inside: Serving Justice Impacted Individuals

Tyron LaFountain, CBHPSS

Peer support is an essential and growing component of the behavioral health landscape, offering connection, lived experience, and empowerment. This session will provide an overview of what peer support is—and what it is not—while exploring its scope, ethical foundations, and role within systems of care.

Participants will learn about the pathway to becoming a Certified Behavioral Health Peer Support Specialist (CBHPSS), including certification requirements and billing considerations, as well as current trends and outcomes in Montana and nationally. The session will also highlight peer support within the criminal justice system, including Inside Out Peer Services, a peer-led nonprofit serving justice-impacted individuals. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how peer support expands access to care and supports recovery across diverse settings.
